From 12th October 2025:
The Entry/Exit Scheme (EES) is a new automated system for registering travellers from outside the European Union (EU). It will replace the old system of stamping passports. Instead, your entry and exit dates will be recorded digitally. This applies to non-EU citizens, including those from the UK, who don't need a visa for short stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period.
Once the system goes live, you will need to have your face scanned and your fingerprints taken at passport control, in addition to providing your passport.
Who will it apply to?
It applies to most people travelling from the UK who are not EU or Schengen area citizens and are visiting for a short stay. A short stay refers to a visit, holiday, or business trip lasting up to 90 days within a 180-day period. Most UK to Europe travel falls under this category.
The following people are exempt:
- Irish passport holders.
- British passport holders with EU residency.
Children under 12 will not need to provide fingerprints but will need to have a facial scan.
Travelling on a cruise
Whether you need to go through the EES depends on your cruise itinerary, especially if your cruise starts and finishes outside the Schengen Area (like in the UK) or if it begins or ends in a Schengen country.
You will not need to complete the EES;
- If your cruise departs from and returns to a UK port.
- For day trips that are part of your cruise itinerary.
You will need to complete the EES;
- If you fly to a European country to start your cruise. Travellers will need to complete the EES process upon arrival at their airport.
- If your cruise ends in an EU country after departing the UK, your exit information will be captured at the border check of the country you are flying home from.
